New Waves Is Now a Non-Profit!
New Waves Productions is officially becoming a non-profit in 2020. This will allow us to more effectively serve the northern NJ artistic community and enable us to seek funding through grants in order to build a future as an educational resource and home for quality cinema and art.
We are currently seeking volunteers and interns to help out. We need individuals who can help with organization and grant writing starting in 2020. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please email us or speak to us at an upcoming event!
Our mission statement:
New Waves Productions is an arts and education non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation of foreign and independent films and the belief that the visual arts are powerful educational tools for students of all ages.
Film culture today is dominated by the mediocrity and mass-marketed entertainment of the large studios. As a result, quality films are crowded out and rarely seen. New Waves has an alternative vision. Film is an art form, akin to literature, music, and painting. However, the potential of film to educate and inspire can only be realized by a dedicated community of individuals, organizations, and schools.
The mission of New Waves will be advanced through its educational arm, La Cinémathèque. Since 2011, La Cinémathèque has been screening foreign and independent films through a unique seminar-style approach. First, participants receive an introduction to the film, its director, and its historical and cultural contexts. After viewing the film, participants engage in a guided discussion about the film. La Cinémathèque will continue to host series of films from around the world which celebrate the diversity of directors and actors across place and time.
New Waves will also fill the void of quality films shown in New Jersey by raising funds to establish its own one-room “Art House” theater that screens independent and foreign films for the viewing public. Just a few miles away in New York City, by contrast, one can find quality films in various locations. New Jersey deserves as much. Why not bring the same vision of cinema to our community with the goals of educating and inspiring people of all ages and diverse backgrounds? The message of cinema is powerful; it can raise awareness of social issues and promote cultural appreciation.
In addition to screening films, New Waves will establish a fundraising and grant writing team, which will support aspiring filmmakers with the creation of independent films and documentaries. By fund raising and grant writing New Waves will help this important artistic form to thrive and reach a wider audience.
New Waves Productions will also have an arm to promote the use of visual art as an educational tool by sponsoring the creation and exhibition of art in various formats and venues. New Waves will bring its distinctive approach into schools and community centers by way of demonstrations, workshops and exhibitions to explore art appreciation and advance multicultural education through artistic practice.
