NIKITA (1990) Luc Besson - Cinéma du Look

Due to technical difficulties in January, we have rescheduled our screening of Nikita for June 6. All tickets to the January event will be honored, and new registrations are encouraged!

Convicted felon Nikita (Anne Parillaud), instead of going to jail, is given a new identity and trained to be a secret police assassin controlled by the government. Her lonely life is warmed when she falls in love with a man who knows nothing of her mysterious life.

Join us in Spring 2021 for a series on the French film movement of the 1980s and ‘90s known as the Cinéma du Look. These films were groundbreaking and shocking in their combination of European art film sensibilities, comic book visuals, Hollywood spectacle, and youthful rebellion.

We will be screening and discussing five seminal films of the movement over Zoom.

These events are a fundraiser for New Wave Productions and your tax-deductible donation is critical to our success in 2021. Members-only pricing available to members of both New Wave Productions and the South Orange Performing Arts Center. Learn more about our membership for 2021.

A sexually transmitted disease called STBO is sweeping the country; it's spread by having sex without emotional involvement, and most of its victims are teenagers who make love out of curiosity rather than commitment. While a serum that can treat the disease has been formulated, it's been locked away in an inaccessible government building. A woman hires a man to steal the serum.

THE INNOCENT (1976) Luchino Visconti

La Cinémathèque is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a live event this month!

Join us on Sunday, April 25th at 2PM for a screening of The Innocent by Luchino Visconti in one of the SOPAC’s movie theaters.

linnocente_43_38_1593514334524_3.jpg

After several misguided projects, Visconti's last film returns to the territory he knew best, and forms a worthy finale to a distinguished career. The plot is understated melodrama: a turn-of-the-century gentleman of leisure indulges all his own extra-marital whims, but is mortified when his wife has an affair; his whole philosophy crumbles as he desperately tries to preserve his self-respect. It's based (faithfully) on a novel by Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Visconti's treatment is much more novelistic than melodramatic: the style is uninflected, and the stately camerawork directs attention to the period manners and environments and the notably convincing characterisations. The film resolves itself into an almost painfully sincere meditation on masculine self-delusion. It has a great performance from Laura Antonelli as the wife, and excellent ones from Giannini and Jennifer O'Neill as husband and lover.

One of the most stunningly beautiful films ever made, "The Big Blue" features gorgeous underwater photography and spectacular location shooting in the French Antibes, the Greek islands, Peru, and Taormina in Sicily. But it is the emotional intensity of the film experience and mystical themes of the story that have made it a cult phenomenon.

AMORES PERROS (2000) Alejandro González Iñárritu

A bold, intensely emotional, and ambitious story of lives that collide in a Mexico City car crash. Inventively structured as a triptych of overlapping and intersecting narratives, Amores Perros explores the lives of disparate characters who are catapulted into unforeseen dramatic situations instigated by the seemingly inconsequential destiny of a dog named Cofi.

The Latin American film series features four important and award-winning films from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Peru. Post-screening discussions will center around the culture and politics of each country as presented in the films as well as the artistic content and human interest stories.
